Rain Garden Restoration

Pending approval of our planting list from Facilities, we have applied for funding through the UMD Sustainability Grant this fall in order to prepare our first grader in Spring 2024. We'd love to have more people join our team this semester, hope to see you all there!

Spring 2024 Meetings: Wednesdays 5:30 PM on Discord

Algal "Terp" Scrubber

The Algal Terp Scrubber (ATS) team has been working to implement the largest scale ATS ever constructed for public access. The proposed 150m^2 system is planned for the hillslope of the Terrapin Trail parking garage, where it would use algae growth and harvesting to remove pollutants from the watershed and provide education and engagement for passerby. The last step before construction is the consent of the Architecture Land Review Board for UMD.

Start Date: September 2017

Spring 2024 Meetings: Wednesdays 4:15 PM at McKeldin

Green Wall

The Green Wall team has been working to design, develop, and construct a free-standing, self-maintaining outdoor green wall on campus. The 5ft x 8ft green wall is being built at Dr. Tilley's lab. Currently, the team is constructing the frame and waiting for plant supplies. Given the delays caused by COVID-19, the team aims to start and finish building during Spring Semester, 2024.

Stream Restoration

This project was started by a former member, Denise Alving. She was passionate about repairing up some of our local waterways and set about studying and cleaning Campus Creek. The team is hoping to continue Denise’s work, collaborating with UMD Facilities and faculty to assist in the professional restoration of the stream.

We will be communicating with faculty about linking existing broader stream restoration efforts with our own brand new project. We will also be having creek clean-ups, social gatherings, and are coordinating to join invasive plant species removal efforts near Paint Branch Stream.

Start Date: 2018

Spring 2024 Meetings: Currently on pause

Green Mechanics

We have obtained funding and are in the process of administrative work. In the meantime, we are beginning the process of developing our dashboard and testing the effectiveness of our sensors.

External Projects

LEAFhouse

LEAFhouse was a UMD Solar Decathlon Project located on campus, and has been used to incorporate students and student sustainability projects in the surrounding area. This location has been a hub for environmental organizations as both a space to meet and develop projects. Currently, LEAFhouse is at risk of being removed, so AEES was involved in securing funding to buy LEAFhouse. This project now falls under the jurisdiction of the LEAFhouse Cooperative, a coalition of student organizations with the goal to unite sustainability groups and projects across campus.
